Bug#263400: gnome-applets: WindowListApplet hangs gnome-panel

I'm reporting this as a bug on gnome-applets, but it may be related to
gdesklets or gnome-panel. The facts:

 * gnome-panel worked fine, with a WindowList applet loaded
 * I played with gdesklets, installing a couple of desklets which seem
 to embed a window list applet, but it didn't suit me, and I purged the
 package
 * after that, my panel was frozen and unresponsive to mouse clicks, the
 window list applet had disapeared. Killing gnome-panel had no effect. 
 * I edited the gconf configuration file and added
 OAFIID:GNOME_WindowListApplet to /apps/panel/global:disabled_applets,
 and this restored a functional panel (without the window list,
 obviously).

This is annoying, especially since I have no idea of how I could restore
the applet, which I use quite often, actually.

Any help or hint welcome.
