Package: gdm
Version: 2.4.4.7-3
Severity: important
File: /usr/bin/gdmflexiserver

Hello,

whenever I start gdmflexiserver, a message pops up saying:=20

	Cannot start new display

The X server failed. Perhaps it is not configured well.

This happens on a newly installed maschine. The file XF86Config-4 did
not change however and in the old installation (with the same version of
gdm) the command succeeded.

The command writes the output of "/usr/X11R6/bin/X :-1" to
/var/log/gdm/:-1.log:

	Bad display name: -1
	use: X [:<display>] [option]
	-a # mouse acceleration (pixels)
	-ac disable access control restrictions
	...

If I run gdmflexiserver with the option -d, it prints:

	Sending command: 'VERSION'
	  Got response: 'GDM 2.4.4.7'
	Sending command: 'AUTH_LOCAL 0a66f9bc921aa327a8001b05478a3cdc'
	  Got response: 'OK'
	Sending command: 'CLOSE'
	Sending command: 'VERSION'

	Sending command: 'AUTH_LOCAL 0a66f9bc921aa327a8001b05478a3cdc'
	  Got response: 'OK'
	Sending command: 'FLEXI_XSERVER Standard'
Got response: 'ERROR 3 X failed'
	Sending command: 'CLOSE'

If I add option -n, the output is:

	Sending command: 'VERSION'
	  Got response: 'GDM 2.4.4.7'
	Sending command: 'FLEXI_XNEST :0.0 1000 f0918a11ecd5a0e06134a9b7bd070d69 /=
home/zeisberg/.Xauthority'
Got response: 'ERROR 3 X failed'
	Sending command: 'CLOSE'

The information logged to syslog is:

	Jun 22 15:08:45 cepheus gconfd (zeisberg-2738): starting (version 2.6.1), =

I am able to start a new instance of X with the command

	/usr/X11R6/bin/X :9

(as root)

My X cookies are ("xauth list"):

	cepheus/unix:0 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 0a66f9bc921aa327a8001b05478a3cdc

In the old installation the version of libgnomeui-0 etc. was only 2.4.*,
but I don't think, this is the problem.

Any ideas?

Regards,
Uwe

You can't reproduce it, I can't reproduce it, that's enough to close it.
