Package: capplets
Version: 1:2.6.1-3
Severity: critical

Critical because causes unrelated software in the system to misbehave.

gnome-settings-daemon is started in the usual case by gnome-session.
But there's really _nothing_ that says that this program is not to be
run by the user, and there's a situation where the user might want to
start it by himself: namely when not using gnome-sesison. In my
particular case I need this otherwise unwanted piece of software
because Epiphany will happyly ignore my preferences if
gnome-settings-daemon isn't running. For that reason I start
gnome-settings-daemon "by hand" in my .xsession. Since this thing is
now hidden somewhere in /usr/lib, my .xsession can't find it and some
programs that I use suddenly ignore the preferences I've set.

Care to give me a reason for taking gnome-settings-daemon out of the
 default user's PATH?

 Cheers,

 Marcelo

Coin,

First ,if you r not accepting we give our opinion, no need to pretend to
be listening.

Ok, so i'm on the right place.

In simple words you can find here what is the goal of the gnome config
system : http://developer.gnome.org/arch/gnome/misc/
So, gnome-settings-daemon is designed "for GNOME programs".

GNOME is designed to be a complete desktop avec pieces are not meant to
be used in another projects. So if you want it to work in another
manner, do work your scripts to adapt with the existing architecture, or
suggest the upstream authors to change their mind.

Moreover, http://www.gnome.org/projects/epiphany/ says :
"The web browser for the GNOME Desktop"
So it is by goal especially designed for GNOME and no other environment.

Authors are not obliged to agree with you and your "wishes" won't
automatically be applied. So if you are not happy, just wonder why you
are using Free softwares. It's as easy as using another software, create
your own, or fork GNOME if your goals differs too much from GNOME's
current ones.

So, this is NOT a bug, this is wanted by design, and this program IS NOT
meant to be launched by users, it is meant to be launched in a session.

>> I'm changing the severity to normal.

> No, you are not.

So, now, please chg your tone, seb128 is doing much more for Debian
users than you are, moaning like this, read GNOME documentation, and STOP
bugging us with such silly arguments.

As we r all loosing our time instead of improving GNOME for Sarge, and
there is NO REAL reason to prevent it from going into the next release,
i'm closing this non-bug, and be sure i keep watching over it staying
closed.

P.S. : stay away from gnome-applets, i don't want u asking for them
working in windowmaker or whatever, they r in '/usr/lib' and won't move
because of you.
