FWIW, I had exactly the same problem, and after loading the "sg" module,
everything was working fine.

So i would recommend either of:
a) do a "modprobe sg" automatically when ncb starts
b) add "sg" to /etc/modules automatically in ncb postinstall
c) put a line in README.Debian that the sg module has to be loaded
