I have similar problem with 'mc' and 'less' at least. It appears that gnome-terminal is more "dumb".

In 'mc' it causes unnecessary requests for manual screen repaints - I am pushed to make ^R keypress after each command running, and according to 'mc' package it means that terminal is dumb and can not handle "smart" screen updates, making it via full screen scrolling.
In 'less' it causes visible delays while scrolling back along any text file, which also appears to be from same reason.

With common x-term this problems do not exist both in 'mc' and 'less' packages.
