Yes, this was changed because the alternative is the wrong place for
that. You should set the default window manager using GConf. If you want
to set it for the whole system, you can modify the schemas in
/etc/gconf/schemas/desktop_gnome_applications_window_manager.schemas and
launch again libgnome2-common's postinst.
(We're working on a better handling of gconf schemas which would improve
the sysadmin's experience, but this will probably be post-sarge.)
