There is so much that the whole scroll buffer is occupied, so one
cannot even scroll back to see how it all started.

One also sees

Maybe it thinks everybody is always online.

By the way, upon purge:
Removing gnome-panel-data ...
WARNING: Failed to parse default value `??' for schema (/schemas/apps/clock_applet/prefs/hour_format)

Maybe root's LC_* env variables are at play.
