i have found the same problem.
deleting .gconf and .gconfd directories in my home folder solved some of
the troubles, giving me a default desktop, which i was able to
re-customize immediatley after. I don't remember if all the error
messages go away ( i think it still complains about XKB, but can't
verify now because i've upgraded just my laptop at home and not my
desktop at work ).
