I have some backup files in /etc/inid.d. They get listed in the services list of
the runlevel configurator. Examples of available services that I'm offered to turn
on / off are:

aumix.dpkg-old
dhcp~
dhcp.dpkg-old
fetchmail.dpkg-old
networking~
ntpdate~
ntpdate.dpkg-old

I would have expected both backup files and .dpkg-old files to not be in that list.
