No, I click on the "open" button (since I want to open a file). And it
happens every time. It also crashes when I use the menu rather than the
icon to try to open a file.

Yes.

Gnome and metacity.

With a fresh user on xterm failsafe session, it doesn't crash (even with
metacity launched). With a fresh user on a gnome session (or a xterm
failsafe with gnome-session launched), it does crash.
