Is there any "hardened security" setup present? Looks like the running X
configuration doesn't play well with AM_CHECK_PYGTK while the latter
works fine even when X is not running.

We need to find out the difference in the environment on a tty console
and in an X terminal window.

What's stored inside the DISPLAY enironment variable in both cases? And
XAUTHORITY? (They both should be unset in the chroot, I guess.)

What about a tty console but with X still running in parallel? :)
