We have 2 issues here.
1) Forcing users to use udev which has some annoying bugs.
2) The fact the latest udev in sid doesn't work with the Debian kernels.

Item 1) can be solved by bringing back the magicdev alternative. Item 2)
can be solved by forcing the udev maintainer (maybe through the
technical committee) to support the 2.6 kernels beginning with the
version in sarge.
