 The udev maintainer provided additional informations:

18:11 <Md> a few things I remembered about our discussion of yesterday:
18:11 <lool> hmm?
18:12 <Md> I do not think that the next HAL release will work with magicd=
ev,=20
           because the udev maintainer wrote that it will require a 2.6.1=
2=20
           kernel too
18:12 <lool> ah that's a pity :-/
18:12 <Md> also I was wrong in saying that udev is currently uninstallabl=
e, on=20
           fresh installs it will install fine but not enable itself
18:13 <lool> ok
18:13 <Md> most important thing: currently it's possible to disable udev =
by=20
           disabling the init script, and AFAIK it works. if there is som=
e real=20
           need for this I could better document it
18:15 <lool> I suppose it's always good to document it, but I presume you=
 might=20
             have more important things to do
18:16 <lool> ok, I'll update the bug with your informations
18:17 <Md> (I also want to add that ubuntu enables udev by default and it=
 works=20
           fine, so I'm not giving much credit to a few people screaming,=
 most=20
           of them not even using udev...)
18:25 <lool> well, I'm using udev, and everything seems fine right now, e=
ven if=20
             I'm in 2.6.11
18:25 <Md> yes, today I verified that the bug is not version specific, an=
d=20
           raising the required kernel version was not needed yet

   Bye,
