Package: gnome-bin
Version: 1.4.2-16
Severity: normal

Note after re-reading it:
This bug report is not very nice and contains several bugs. I know
this is not the way to go, but I have problems seperating the bugs, so
I still send it as a whole. Please tell me how to properly split this
report (and against which packages, which extra information you need
etc.) and than I rereport it against the respective packages and close
this one. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Summary:
->gnome-session starts even if it did not before (error on upgrade)
  and does not honor the background and other settings
->gnome-terminal requires gnome-session (wishlist)
->Error about xscreensaver (which I don't use)
->Gnome starts without window manager, making it hard to use
->discard-button does not work as advertised after converting config
->gnome-help.png seems to be missing
->general errors while converting
->general problems with the panel

Now the longish bug report:

I always boot into text mode and start X on demand by using startx.
I use a plain wmaker environment with wmaker-session support. I do not
use neither gnome nor KDE, just single programs (konquerer,
gnumeric,gnome-terminal) from them, and I would like to keep it this way.

I upgraded testing and got a lot of gnome packages installed. I wanted
this, because I wanted the applications.=20

After next reboot, I typed, as usually, startx, and now I have a gnome
panel, lots of warnings/errors/questions, a new background, lots of
gnome-processes running (at least 5 with gnome in their name) without
ever being asked if I wanted this. I never run such an environment and
IMHO updates should not force them on me.

Also wmaker is not running. I never installed explicitly a new window
manager. Looking around, it seems like there is no window manager
running at all (I first have to decide if I want to keep it it the way
or if I want to have a standard gnome desktop -- why can't I choose to
get the old =BBdesktop=AB back, without any gnome?).=20

Well, I was told "discard" would log me out and into a new gnome
desctop. This description is wrong. It simply closes the dialog.

Ok, I took a screen-picture [1] of this broken mess (there was a menu item
for this -- a **very** good idea!).

Now after logging out and running =BBstartx=AB again, I have my window
maker back, though Gnome print a background image and the second error
message (see below) [2] appears.

After some while (20 seconds?) this picture vanishes and I get another
error message (see [3]) and than I have a toolbar at top and at the
bottom, both stealing space (see [4]).

Pressing on the lower button I get an error message (see [5])
telling me "Your window manager does not support the "Show Desktop"
button or you are not using a window manager currently".

Ok, next I delete the panel (which works), but only for one panel.
Grr. This panel, fortunately, is only present on one virtual screen,
though. Is there any documentation to get gnome apps to start but not
GNOME as a whole?=20

I do not have a .xsession file (I did not need it so far).
=2Exsession-errors contains lots of errors:

Next I wanted to quit my X session, and run as usually the exit-menu
from window maker, but now I don't have a window manager anymore but X
still running. Since I stoped the panel, how should I now stop X? I
guess, with Strg-Alt-Del. Grr.=20

Now I removed gnome-panel, let's see.=20

After next start of X, I seem to be back at the beginning, with
questions about upgrading my GNOME-config. I discard again, and since
no window manager nor anything else seems runnig, I kill X again as
above.

Next start of X I get a completely "blue screen". Now window manager, nothi=
ng.
Just a brief view of the Gnome welcome screen and some error messages
(xscreensaver) to click away.

Now I look at /etc/alternatives, and=20
sixtyfor:/etc/alternatives# update-alternatives --list x-session-manager
/usr/bin/gnome-session

Guess, not much choice :-((

Now I remove gnome-session, but then gnome-terminal (which I liked and
used, but which looked a little strange above) are leaving too. But
first I want a sane environment back!

Another kill of X and startx later, I have my environment back, except
for the gnome-terminals. Guess I have to look for another terminal
which does not force all this described above upon me. Or is there a
way to get gnome-terminal, but avoid this session thingy (I have that
from window maker already, so I don't need a second, so obstrusive
one). Also now there are no gnome-daemons started when I start X
(which I don't want anyways).=20

Please feel free to reassing this to whichever package(s) this really
belongs to. Some error messages are localized, when quoting them here
I gave the rough english translation, but if you need more
translations I can give them to you.=20

Hello,
now that sarge is out of the door, it does not make sense keeping this
messy bug report open. I had hoped to help, but as it seems I did the
oposite. Further I no longer use gnome-terminal (since this incident,
actually).=20

If someone else discovers these problems when upgrading from woody to
sarge, she'll have to report it again, I am afraid, but more precise.

Greetings

           Helge
