I've selected 'Show Thousands Separator', to no avail. There's a check
mark next to the menu item. Is there some other clever way of getting
the separators to show up?

Hello,

As discussed in the previous mails, this is not a bug in gcalctool, but
the result of a configuration problem.

I therefore close this bug report.

Regards,
