Hi,

I remarked the same.
There is no need to restart gdm, only open an xterm and killall gnome-panel, it
will restart automagically.

If session autosave is checked or if you save the session an other way, there
are two gnome-panel instances created in ~/.gnome2/session.

If I edit manually the session file and remove the extra instance, I've not 
the error popup at start. Everything is (about) fine until I save the session.

I say "about" because sometimes, gnome-panel crashed instead terminate cleanly
while exiting the gnome desktop.
