Bug#331000: several gnome-panel applets die on startup

When using kernel 2.4.27-2-686 from sarge, and starting with a fresh
gnome (ie a new user) logging into gnome works fine.  If you logout
and do 'save session', then on subsequent logins the 'Show Desktop',
'Window Selector', 'Window List' and 'Workspace Switcher' applets all
die and have to be restarted.  I tried removing gnome-volume-manager
from the session (since it needs hal which won't work with with 2.4
anyway), but it keeps happening.  Do not have this problem with
2.6.8-2-386 debian kernel.
