Bug#331063: gnome-panel: downgrading to xfree86 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14 'fixes' the problem

After reading the previous post regarding [DSA 816-1], I tried
downgrading libxpm4 to the previous version (xfree86 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14).
No effect.  However downgrading all xfree86 packages to 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14
worked.  Using kernel 2.4.27-2-686, and after stopping then starting gdm
I was able to login over and over without the applets crashing.

I tried recompiling gnome-panel with the new xfree86 packages, but the
applets still crashed.
