 I tried to install the same buggy version of gconf2 in my sid pbuilder
 via snpashot, and I couldn't reproduce the purge failure you initially
 reported. :-(

 Probalby the exact same error since they both use the same package
 layout + maintainer scripts.

 Could you try reproducing it and noting what produced the bug?

 Could it be a process (gconfd) running outside of the chroot?
