Hi,
I had run "rm -rf .gnome* .gconf*" and it did not help; the default
desktop configuration contained the volume mixer applet which would also
fail to start.
Only reinstalling gnome-panel + gnome-applets helped. I don't know which
of these it was as I did both at once, sorry.
