 Hmm, probably because there were no patches and thus the patches dir is
 not created when you apply the Debian diff.  Then I grant you that it
 wasn't as easy to guess, but you could have seen that the package uses
 a patch system nevertheless.  Your changes were more intrusive in this
 way than downloading the patches I've sent upstream and drop them in a
 dir.
