It would be interesting to know if this crash happens with gtk2-engines 
2.10 from experimental. You could try upgrading, but be aware that it
will also upgrade to GTK+ 2.10 and quite a bit of GNOME.

Otherwise, maybe you can compile gtk2-engines with debug symbols and try
to capture a stacktrace? There are instructions here,
