I just turned it off. I'll have to give it a little while to see if it
has any effect since the slow unlock behavior only seems to happen when
the screensaver has been active for a while.

Incidentally, is there any way to disable this option within the UI? I
found the gconf key for it, but this seems like something that you
should be able to switch from within the gnome-screensaver preferences
dialog. (Unless I just missed it somewhere.)

As far as I could tell it seems to be gnome-screensaver specific. All
other apps that use PAM for authentication don't show any slowdown.

No, unfortunately. I just did a test-run of the upgrade, and it wants to
remove beagle (among other things) which is something I use quite a few
times each day. If/when beagle gets a 2.16-friendly version available in
experimental I'll be glad to give it a shot.
