Indeed, it doesn't work this way. Now, could you try with the following
command ?

env `gdmXnest -b` GDM_THEME=industrial DOING_GDM_DEVELOPMENT=yes GDM_PARENT_DISPLAY="$DISPLAY" GDM_IS_LOCAL=yes GDM_FLEXI_SERVER=yes gdb /usr/lib/gdm/gdmgreeter

A new window should appear, and at the gdb prompt in the initial window
you type "run", then "bt" at the segmentation fault time.

If the backtrace is full of question marks (which is likely to happen),
it would also be nice to rebuild a debugging version of the gdm package,
