Package: gnome
Followup-For: Bug #405179

Ok, after some more experimentation and mad laughter I've found that simply rebooting and then using control-alt-F8
causes the same phenomenon. control-alt-F(1-7) work as expected.

I'm ready to bet my hamster this has nothing to do with GNOME, but something far more sinister...
