I just pulled out the scanner to try, and I could not reproduce the
problem.  The error message that I got before no longer occurs.  I produced
another error message by pulling the USB cord just before scanning and that
error message was in a well behaved window.  I cannot say if that error
message would have been a problem in the past.

I believe that this issue can be closed.
