It has for a while, but I had stable in /etc/apt/sources.list and woops
ran apt-get update.

Woops, s/stable/sarge/ and apt-get upgrade/update and it is mostly
working. Well, whatever I've put back.

This all comes from wanting to get firefox and thunderbird working again.

Well, apt-get install is the one that suggests the repositories are wrong.
When I look at the three dependencies for libpango1.0-dev, it complains
about the two I mentioned and indicates it wants prior version to what it
can see.

If I've changed /etc/apt/sources.list "back" to sarge, and run apt-get
update, why would it be looking at the etch repository?

I understand what you are saying. So where else in my confuguration would
it be set? I thought it was all set in /etc/apt/sources.list

lol, Never use version 1.0. I prefer to wait until a new stable has been
out at least six months before upgrading. I want to use linux, not be a
system administrator.
