Thanks for upgrading to sid, sarge only gets security updates, so
there's no real surprise if you're not seeing any improvement in 3.1r5.

I wonder if this is a good benchmark at all. 

For the first test, repeated tests give me results between 0.2 and 6
seconds in gnome-terminal. In xterm the results are much worse, between
0.5 and 35 seconds.

The second test is usually between 0.2 and 0.3 seconds in gnome-terminal
and around 0.4 in xterm.

Both terminals are running in standard size, 80x24.

I don't know if you follow GNOME development, but performance in
gnome-terminal was greatly increased in the 2.14 release.

A bigger issue, I think, is what fonts you are using, this can make a
huge difference, as can be seen in these notes on gnome-terminal
