I can't reproduce this;

unset DISPLAY
python /usr/share/doc/python-gtk2-tutorial/html/examples/helloworld.py
/var/lib/python-support/python2.4/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py:69:
GtkWarning: could not open display
[...]
