v2.20 is in sid. I am a very error prone person, and am not sure about doing
whatever is needed to install it on my Etch box. And the issue is already
fixed for me in that I know to use GDM Setup in the Gnome drop-down menus to
do any further editing of the message that I might need.

When I reported the bug, I rather expected it would be tedious to find its
root cause. It surely detracts from appearance of Gnome so I thought it
worth while to get its existence on the record. In the meantime, maybe a
'fix' is to flash a message saying to use GDM Setup to do the edit.

Also, perhaps pre-load the message 'Welcome to %n' into the edit box, so that
the most likely custom message is already there, and simple minded users like
me will need only click on the custom message button.
