 Can you try with gnome-appearance-properties instead?  This might need
 the unstable version of control-center.

 That's really weird.  I'm relatively suspicious of how the theme is
 being set in your particular environment.  Do you run
 gnome-settings-daemon BTW?

 If it is truly a syntax issue, I should get it when I use Mist, but I
 don't.  It looks to me as these are handled by an older or a different
 parser.  What's your Gtk+ engine?  Could you be using a Gtk+ 1 app or
 do you have an older version of Gtk in your library path?
