Hi,
i had a similar problem some days ago. After a not so grateful shutdown (cells
were empty and system shutt of without shutdown, without a message) my gnome
settings were borked. Say: Window Decorations wasn't as I set them. But that
does not necessarily mean that these were caused by the sudden stop of th
esystem, because I had dist-upgraded some hours ago.
But it wasn't possible to start the appearance settings, because it starts up
and then crashes again.
I made a stacktrace (attached) and found out, that it
is crashing due to a strcmp of a fixed value with a pointer, while the last one
seems to be NULL. There is no condition check for NULL so this fails off
course. After crawling deeper into the sourcecode I noticed that the source for
the pointer is a function that seems to query the gconf database. So probably
the error occurs if some default value is not set in the gconf database (?).
Well, I am not a coder, so this might be wrong, but it should be a hint.
I got it running by adding a if value is null clause in the if clause with the
strcmp, but that is probably just a quick hack.
