Hi,

I did a few tests, and gdm should be able to handle a broken
configuration file, so that's probably not it.

You mentioned that this happens in a Xinerama setup, does it also happen
if reconfigure X to only use one monitor?

Do you get any error messages printed on the terminal, or in any of the
log files gdm writes to? These are located in /var/log/gdm/
