Hi,
it works fine for me with the versions in unstable. Also this is in
gnome-applets, no gnome-media and doesn't even depend on it :)

Could you please
a) kill or remove the applet from the panel
b) call /usr/lib/gnome-applets/mixer_applet2 from a terminal
c) add the applet again to the panel

What does this give you on the terminal? Something useful?
