The gnome-desktop-environment dependency is here as a compromise for
those who want to install a half-assed browser without good GNOME
integration and still use this metapackage.

The gnome metapackage, on the other side, is here to bring a
full-fledged GNOME desktop. That includes a GNOME mail client, a GNOME
office suite, and… a GNOME web browser. If you don't like this
selection, you can simply remove the gnome metapackage and make your own
one, it shouldn't be a problem.
