Short of digging through the nautilus code are these heuristics
documented anywhere? Better yet, are they adjustable?

I routinely create a separate partition for my logs (/var/log), this is
frequently appears on the desktops for my users.

As far as I can tell, the current state is an all or nothing switch to
either display all volume icons that fail some (currently unknown)
filtering heuristic or display no drive icons.

The display of volume icons is useful for removable media (such as those
items mounted via pmount), but not so useful for more permanently
attached volumes (such as additional partitions of the local hard drive(s)).
