I was also having a problem with the screen dimming after a few seconds
or so, which was really annoying. I found a solution[1] which also solved
this issue. Apparently, there might some broken schemas in the user
side (which is possible, as I've used Debian/Sid for a while). The solution was to run:

gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/gnome-power-manager

as user. hope this helps, Neil. 

I guess this bug can be closed now.
