As I said later in the bug report another user had esound running because,
for some reason, it did not exit after the user left his GNOME session. So
the application already using the device was 'esound' albeit not mine (I
don't actually use it in my GNOME configuration).

I guess that crashing because it cannot get a hold of the device is the issue that should be handled by rhythmbox.
