Sorry, but I don’t buy it. That would include a dependency on "menu",
which includes the su-to-root utility; since Debian GNOME has dropped
the Debian menu, it sounds stupid to bring it back just for the sake of
an utility.

gksu can be configured system-wide to use sudo, through GConf.
See /usr/share/doc/gconf2/README.Debian for instructions on how to do
that in a Debian package.
