I disagree. There is no mention in the other bug about whether or
not software sound mixing in ALSA is working or not. The user was
complaining that a particular maintenance level of libesd-alsa0 was not
allowing him to hear system sounds. Everything worked BUT system sounds.
I have the opposite problem. ONLY system sounds work. (More correctly,
only sounds directed to the Enlightened Sound Daemon work.) But I have
a solution, and that solution is to enable software sound mixing in ALSA.
But software sound mixing in ALSA is supposed to be enabled automatically,
when needed, according to the Debian Wiki and the change log of libasound2.
But it isn't happening. But when I enable software sound mixing
manually, it works.

Maybe enabling software sound mixing in ALSA would circumvent the other user's
problem. You can ask him to try it if you want. But even if it does, the
problem that I am reporting is that software sound mixing is supposed to
occur automatically, if needed, and it isn't occurring. Not on my hardware
anyway. I don't see how esound could possibly be responsible for software
sound mixing in ALSA not working.
