I know that replacing libesd0 with libesd-alsa0 will get gnome's System Sounds to work, so I think that there is a bug which is stopping them from working with libesd.

I really would like to have Debian working for System Sounds for
everyone out there who are linux experts (like me).
Your suggestion of work on GNOME 2.24 in experimental sound interesting,
however at this time I don't have enough time to allocate to such a
project. Finding time to report a few bugs is using up most of my spare
time. I thank you and all the other people who work hard to make Debian
the great operating system and collection of applications that it is.

Are you able to reproduce the issue that I have reported (that is, do
you have a PC that you can install nothing but a Debian Lenny standard
desktop and install gnome-sound and enable gnome's "System Sounds". It
would be nice to know that others also have this problem.

Thanks, George.
