It doesn't seem to be the case anymore :(

Even running esd in the GDM init script doesn't help.

I have made more tests.

On another machine, everything works perfectly. This is an i386 laptop
running pure unstable, whereas my main machine is an amd64 with packages
from experimental (for GNOME 2.24).

I have also noticed that, thought it might not be related, esd doesn't
exit when logging out from GNOME:
$ ps aux | grep [e]sd
julien2   3377  0.4  0.0  31856  3180 ?        SL   15:23   0:00 esd -nobeeps
julien    3632  0.5  0.0  31864  3136 ?        SL   15:25   0:00 esd -nobeeps

If i am right, this was supposed to be fixed in this release.

I have created a new user just for testing (julien2) and it doesn't work
neither with this new and clean environment (hence note a user
configuration).

I have no idea what I can do to further try and understand what happens.

Note that I have also reported a bug against gnome-control-panel in
experimental (just in case it can be related):

Cheers,
Julien
