Thanks for the quick reply. This should make evince show the wanted
information most of the time.

However, an option to switch between thumbnails and index quickly
would be useful for people who have files that do not work with the
default.

You have to click a dropdown, and select an option. No shortcut for that.

Neither can you make the other behaviour the default (which is
certainly not needed unless you are viewing many broken files - or
searching for a particular figure in several PDFs).
