Bug#535302: /usr/bin/gnome-sound-properties: Can't disable the %^(*%& PC speaker beep

There used to be an option in the sound control panel to disable the annoying
PC speaker beep. Well, the option is still there, but it's greyed out... not
such a problem since it's greyed out but not checked. Except that GTK+ apps
all beep the speaker if I hit backspace in a empty field, Vim beeps if I type
the wrong thing in, etc, etc. So the 'play alerts and sound effects' checkbox
no longer works. :(
