I had the same problem. Here's what I did:

- upgraded to the current version in unstable (0.12.3-1)

That didn't help but it was kind of different - rhythmbox did not ask
anymore for codec downloading. It just refused to play.

Then I did what I did at a home computer for some other reason which I
can't remember now but it obviously was disturbing:
I uninstalled pulseaudio.

Then rhythmbox played like back in lenny.
