I think the solution is fix it in python-gtk2

ok, so this is informative for a user, but how can this be useful for a program?

No, this is to be done in python-gtk2. IMNSHO.

If it can't work without DISPLAY, then raise an exception; if it can
work without DISPLAY then remote the worning.

It doesn't seem an elegant solution.
