Bug#517923: doesn't remember original position when switching 2nd monitor

I'm using a laptop with a second monitor, configured with xrandr
to side-by-side mode. I have the Gnome panels on the LVDS
(internal) monitor. When switching the VGA (external) monitor on,
the panels move to the second screen. I have to move them back
to my (preferred) first screen. Everytime, I switch off and on
the second screen, the panel is on the wrong screen again. Esp.
for presentations, I use the VGA for the projector, so the
panels should be LVDS. Graphics hardware: Intel GM965/GL960.
This is a known bug (reported in mailings lists and online
forums), but I didn't find an appropriate entry in the BTS.
