Why did the chicken cross the road? Upstream decision.

And I can’t blame upstream to have made GConf using D-Bus given the
number of bugs it fixes.

Yes, the result is that root applications can’t use the user’s GConf
settings anymore. This is a design restriction in D-Bus.
