I've got this same bug while using etch and while trying to run the unit
tests for our code that is mostly developed on Ubuntu. It seems, that on
Ubuntu the Word-documents are recognized as application/msword (which is
the standard) and Debian etch recognizes the same document as
application/vnd.ms-word (which is non-standard). Note that standard mime
type for Excel is application/vnd.ms-excel, but for Word it's msword on
other distros.

I can get the unit tests to work by _downgrading_ the debian package
libmagic1 from 5.01->4.26. Note! this seems not to be gnome package
problem but a libmagic1 problem.

Working package is libmagic1_4.26-1_i386.deb

It would be great if Debian would be using standard mime types instead
of non-standard ones.
