It's imaps. From both wireshark and netstat I can see it tries to connect to
67.215.65.132 while host imap.gmail.com is 216.239.59.109.
I'm pretty sure I'm able to connect to imaps, because it works with mutt.

tcp 0 1 192.168.0.153:47839 67.215.65.132:993 SYN_SENT
3583/balsa
tcp 0 0 192.168.0.153:44685 216.239.59.109:993
ESTABLISHED 3347/mutt

Then I've realized that the server was wrong "gmail" instead of "imap.gmail.com".
In either ways there's no feedback when it can't connect to the server, the
programs hangs while the connection should be asynchronous to the GUI. This
is the real problem. I get also no output with -D when it can't connect.
